Industry and union joint letter to Chancellor ahead of the Budget

Trade associations and trade unions have come together to write to the Chancellor ahead of the Autumn Budget, to share our recommendations for improving the UK's competitiveness and delivering reindustrialisation.

A spokesperson for Fuels Industry UK, said:

"This Budget is an opportunity for government to prove its commitment to the reindustrialisation of the UK. It is essential that the Chancellor urgently addresses competitiveness and supports the country’s foundational industries, which are the bedrock of our economy. Unions and trade associations, representing millions of workers and thousands of businesses across the country, are clear that Wednesday’s Budget is the time to act."

Strengthen UK industry, protect jobs and support good growth in every postcode

Dear Chancellor,

Ahead of the Autumn Budget, we are writing to you as the trade associations and trade unions that underpin the UK economy. We provide the energy, materials and technologies that provide the foundations of our wider economy.

Over recent years we have seen declining domestic production, site closures and falling investment across many sectors and across many regions. The UK has become increasingly reliant on imported fuels, materials and other industrial products that were once produced domestically. This has implications for industrial competitiveness as well as the security of the supply chains on which the UK economy depends.

We welcome yours and the Prime Minister’s shared commitment to reindustrialisation and sincerely hope that this will be evident in the forthcoming Autumn Budget We believe three key areas are essential to achieving this:

  • Improving industrial competitiveness, including action to reduce the high energy costs facing UK industry relative to international competitors.
  • Protecting UK producers from unfair international competition, including effective measures to prevent carbon leakage and ensure domestic industries are not undercut by imports produced under weaker standards, while prioritising domestic oil and gas production over imports to strengthen energy security, support UK jobs and investment.
  • Creating the conditions for long-term industrial investment, including stable policy and fiscal frameworks that support modernisation and decarbonisation, not deindustrialisation.
We look forward to working together to strengthen UK industry, protect jobs and support good growth in every postcode.
