Life Saving Rules are a set of guidelines which remind staff of the measures they need to take to protect their own safety. They draw attention to the activities most likely to lead to a fatality, and the life-saving actions which an individual has control over.
Life Saving Rules are intended to support existing company management systems. They are not intended to replace company management systems, policies, safety training programmes, operating procedures or work instructions, as the rules rely on this framework being in place.
The International Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) published a set of Life Saving Rules with the intention of mitigating risk and reduce fatalities within the industry. While companies benefit from implementing their own programmes, there is clarity and effectiveness to be gained in standardising Life Saving Rules across the industry.
Fuels Industry UK considers that the IOGP Life Saving Rules cover all relevant areas relating to safety performance and provides a benchmark of good practice for companies to work with.
They help to:
- Enable better transfer of knowledge, experience and lessons learned
- Increase individual awareness ownership of critical safeguards that prevent fatalities
- Take a step towards an industry-wide common safety language
- Improve clarity and consistency, particularly for contractors and operators doing similar work across member companies
Companies may or may not decide to adopt the IOGP lifesaving rules dependent on their own decisions on compatibility with their own business management systems and policies.
